Thirty five RKYHS students attended the homeless awareness trip to Newark’s Penn Station on the evening before Thanksgiving. Many of the students collected various items on their own such as blankets, winter coats, socks, scarves and much much more. They reached out to many food vendors in the area, as well, asking them to donate food. The Lester Senior Housing also contributed food, as they ran a food drive upon hearing that students were going to Newark for Thanksgiving. Food was also donated by school caterer Shimon Nissel as well as fresh soup prepared by Sharon Kessel, proud parent of alumni Zachary and Elizabeth.
The evening culminated with a tour of the last remaining shul standing in Newark today, Ahavas Shalom, as well as partaking in dinner from Newark’s only kosher restaurant. This program was sponsored in part by the Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest as well as Congregation Ahavas Shalom.
