RKYHS students participated in Liberty Science Center’s Live From Surgery program. Through video conferencing into a live surgery at St. Barnabas Medical Center, the students were led through a successful kidney transplant. The patient, a 48 year old male, was in need of a donor kidney due to disease caused by diabetes. His fiancee, a 42 year old female, was his donor. Using laparoscopic instruments, the doctor successfully removed the donor kidney. He then transferred it to the second operating room where he attached it to the lower part of the recipient’s abdomen, leaving the native kidneys in place. Throughout the procedure, the RKYHS students and the surgical team discussed a variety of topics such as immune response, possible complications, monitoring the patient’s vitals, anesthesia levels, recovery and the importance of organ donation.
