The RKYHS sociology class heard from Paul Walsh, a reporter at the Minneapolis Star Tribune, who has been covering the trial of police officer Derek Chauvin from jury selection to conviction. Walsh showed the students the location of his office next to City Hall and the police station and described the celebrations after the verdict was read. Walsh described the limitations on media covering the case due to COVID and his experience covering the case in real time for a newspaper, competing with other news outlets. He detailed the process of recognizing what is being said, determining if it’s newsworthy and how it fits into the trial. Walsh has been a reporter for 45 years and he told students this was a highlight of his career as a reporter.
