The September session of EC STEM focused on light and shadows. Morah Emily asked the students where light comes from, to which they replied, “electricity, the lightbulbs, and even the sun.” Morah Emily then showed the students different types of flashlights, which they had the opportunity to experiment with. They could make the light get bigger by pulling the light away from themselves, and smaller by bringing the light closer to themselves. Transparent, translucent and opaque were new light-related vocabulary words that the students learned. Lastly, Morah Emily took the students outside, so that they could see their own shadows in the sunlight, and experimented with nature paper, which allows items to make an imprint of a shadow. All of the students in the early childhood classes were enthralled with experimenting with light and shadows.
