Rabbi Pesach Raymon Yeshiva’s third graders completed a hands-on STEM project learning about erosion! Working in groups, the students were challenged to design a landscape that would keep a house on a hill stable against water erosion. The students had materials such as soil, gravel, mesh, turf, popsicle sticks and more to use for experimenting. The projects were tested with heavy “rain,” from a watering can, to measure the success of each design. The class follows the engineering design process of plan, test and rebuild. Each project was redesigned and retested until every group found a successful solution to the erosion problem! The students learned not just about erosion, but important strategies for problem solving.
