The JEC JV Thunder returned to action on Monday, November 7, with their second game of the season, a home game versus the SAR Sting. With the SAR Sting playing their season opener, they came out of the gate very strong, managing to keep the JV Thunder pinned deep in their zone for much of the first period. Only the outstanding goaltending by freshman Dovie Weitz managed to keep the Sting off the scoreboard, allowing the JV Thunder to leave the period up 1-0, after freshman Ben-Zion Kapustin buried a juicy rebound left by the SAR netminder during one of the few chances generated by the JV Thunder.
The second period saw more of Dovie Weitz’s heroics, as the SAR Sting continued their offensive onslaught, capitalizing with only six seconds left on the power play late in the second period. With the score tied at 1 after two periods of play the stage was set for an entertaining and nerve wracking third period.
Early in the third it appeared that the JEC JV Thunder had rediscovered some of their offensive touch as they managed to send a flurry of shots on the SAR net, which were all stopped by SAR’s netminder. As the period continued both teams traded chances at winning the game, yet neither team managed to capitalize.
As overtime began it became apparent that the extra space offered by the 3 on 3 OT format would allow for more offense, and that whichever team managed to take the fewest reckless chances would probably walk away with the win. Finally, with three minutes to go in OT the JV Thunder managed to get the puck deep in the SAR defensive zone. With Ben-Zion Kapustin in front, the JV Thunder put the puck on net where Kapustin managed to collect the rebound just enough to place a second shot on net which forced the SAR goaltender to drop to the floor for the save. With the save made by SAR, a rebound squirted out to the weak side of the net, where the JV Thunder’s captain, sophomore Sammy Simcha, was left uncovered and pounced on the rebound to give the JEC JV Thunder their second win of the year with the final score of 2-1.
