I was very surprised and dismayed to read in the Nov. 28 issue of The Jewish Link, “Rutgers Faculty Set to Vote on BDS Measure” in early December. In retrospect though, I really should not have been surprised. Rutgers has been in the forefront of campus antisemitism for a number of years. Starting as far back as 2017, I, and also others, have written to The Link complaining about antisemitic incidents on the Rutgers campus (e.g., Dec. 7, 14, and 21, 2017).
I was also dismayed then at the lack of response and support from our local Jewish community and its leaders, who left the poor Jewish students on their own in that unequal fight (e.g., The Jewish Link, Feb. 15, April 12, and July 5, 2018).
I consider myself at least an average Jewish community member trying to keep informed about current events, but again I am chagrined at not having heard a single word from anyone, anywhere, about this new development at Rutgers. Nothing from the community or its leaders. Thank goodness for The Jewish Link, although they should not have to be the primary source of such important local developments.
This silent, head in the sand attitude of the Jewish community and its leadership to obviously destructive actions against us can only lead to further damaging actions, which would elicit more complaints from us, but still no real resistance.
How will this attitude, “See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil,” end? Not good.
