Last Thursday marked Yom HaShoah, a solemn day for to reflect upon the unspeakable horrors of the past, and to recognize and memorialize the millions who perished. The RYNJ eighth grade had the opportunity to visit The Museum of Jewish Heritage in Battery Park and view the galleries as survivors recounted their stories in vivid detail. One aim was to better understand the incredibly heroic acts of courage that were made in an attempt to maintain and perpetuate Jewish life amid the threat of undoubted death. When the students looked at a Sefer Torah on display, a survivor captivated them as he told how his father had saved that Torah. Similar stories emerged as the eighth graders passed from one gallery to the next.
