(Courtesy of St. Mary’s General Hospital) St. Mary’s General Hospital and its sister hospital, St. Clare’s of Denville & Dover, have been recognized as five-star recipients for women’s healthcare by Healthgrades. The 2020 Women’s Care Excellence Awards recognize hospitals with clinical outcomes that are statistically and significantly better than other hospitals nationwide.
Each year, Healthgrades analyzes the quality of care of women during and after childbirth, and the outcomes and risks for the most common gynecologic procedures at U.S. hospitals. Women who deliver or have gynecologic procedures at recognized hospitals have a lower risk of experiencing a complication during their hospital stay.
“Hospital quality should be top of mind for consumers when they evaluate and compare hospital performance,” said Brad Bowman, MD, chief medical officer, Healthgrades. “Women who select a hospital with a five-star rating can feel confident in their choice, knowing that these organizations are committed to providing exceptional women’s care to their patients.”
“St. Mary’s General Hospital has also received the 2020 five-star ratings for vaginal and C-section deliveries, hysterectomies and gynecological procedures, and a Gynecological Surgery Excellence Award,” said George Matyjewicz, PhD, community liaison. “These performance awards are very important for our community, given the number of children in a family. Too often our women go to hospitals in New York City or other parts of New Jersey to deliver, when they have all they need right here in Passaic, as verified by an independent rating service1. Which includes a fully renovated Maternal-Child Health Center that features a Level II Nursery specializing in the delivery and care of high-risk infants born as early as 32 weeks.
“It also includes private patient rooms with full bathrooms, overnight guest accommodations, an electronic infant security system and a special dinner for new parents, kosher, of course. With you every step of the way, St. Mary’s General provides free classes in prenatal nutrition and breastfeeding, along with certified breast feeding consultants during your stay.”
Healthgrades, a leading source of healthcare information for consumers, found that there is a significant variation in hospital quality between those that have received five stars and those that have not. For example, women having a hysterectomy in hospitals with five stars have an average 63.7% lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated at hospitals with only one star.
“This is some well-deserved recognition for our incredible Women’s Health Services team,” said Edward J. Condit, president & CEO of St. Mary’s General Hospital. “It is validation of our commitment to make ‘continuous quality improvement’ more than just a goal, but a reality for the health and safety our patients.”
