SAR 12th Graders Connect With Inspirational Rabbi Living With ALS

On Wednesday, February 25, 12th grade students from SAR High School had the rare privilege of participating in a special Zoom meeting with Rabbi Yitzi Hurwitz, a Chabad rabbi from Los Angeles who continues to inspire others despite living with ALS (Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis).

The virtual session, guided by a moderator, created an environment where students could engage directly with Rabbi Hurwitz in a meaningful dialogue. Despite the physical limitations imposed by his condition, Rabbi Hurwitz communicates through specialized eye-tracking technology, which allows him to continue writing his widely-read weekly Torah blog.

Though Rabbi Hurwitz has lost his ability to speak, he has authored hundreds of articles available on social media platforms. During the session, the moderator drew from these writings to answer many of the students’ questions. In preparation for this unique Zoom meeting, students had read an essay written by Rabbi Hurwitz about how meaningful visits from people are to him and how these interactions provide him with encouragement to persevere.

During the session, students raised profound questions about maintaining faith during adversity and confronting the fear of death. Rabbi Hurwitz shared his powerful personal journey, including a pivotal moment when he had the option to decline further medical care. Instead, he chose to continue living, even knowing it would involve significant challenges.

“What struck me most was his unwavering commitment to finding purpose,” shared one student participant. “Despite facing such difficult circumstances, he’s dedicated to inspiring others.”

Through his example and words, Rabbi Hurwitz encouraged students to embrace life fully and find meaning even in difficult circumstances. His message resonated deeply with many students who are contemplating their own futures after graduation.

The session concluded with a touching moment as each student approached the camera individually to introduce themselves and express gratitude to Rabbi Hurwitz for sharing his time and wisdom.

“It really puts things in perspective,” reflected another student. “Here’s someone facing incredible challenges every day, yet he focuses on how he can continue to contribute to others.”

The meeting with Rabbi Hurwitz was part of the SAR high School mission to expose students to diverse perspectives and life experiences that extend beyond traditional classroom learning.
