SAR Academy commemorated Yom Hazikaron in meaningful ways as a school community. Students honored the memory of fallen soldiers who bravely fought and sacrificed their lives for Israel as well as victims of terror. Sunday night they joined the larger Riverdale community at SAR High School for the annual Riverdale Jewish community partnership community-wide Yom Hazikaron ceremony. Local government officials, religious leaders and over 700 individuals filled the auditorium and the powerful program featured personal accounts of loss, prayer and song—including moving performances by the middle school choir. This year’s program struck an emotional chord as we honored the victims of the atrocities of October 7 and the many lives lost throughout the Israel-Hamas war.
On Monday, students were able to experience this powerful day in school. The day began with daily tefillot for Israel on the steps which carried a heavier somber tone. SAR welcomed eight IDF heroes from its community to share personal stories with students—thank you for serving to protect and defend Am Yisrael and Medinat Yisrael. Grades five through eight gathered for a meaningful Yom Hazikaron tekes, students visited the Yom Hazikaron Gallery and others wrote letters to families of fallen soldiers.
As the sun set and the day transitioned into the celebration of Yom Ha’atzmaut, everyone remembered and gave thanks to the giborim (heroes) who gave their lives to ensure safety and freedom of Am Yisrael in Eretz Yisrael. Am Yisrael Chai!
