SAR Academy Hosts First Grade Math Fair

First graders had a blast at their First Grade Neighborhood Math Fair, celebrating math in their world.

This event was an opportunity to blend themes from social studies and math. Over the past few months, the SAR first graders have been studying the people and places in their Riverdale neighborhood as part of a year-long community study.

At the Math Fair, the first graders took their families around the gym to stations that represented some of the places in the neighborhood they visited or learned about, such as the fire station, the library, and Wave Hill.

At each station, there was a game or activity that reflected the place, as well as topics they explored in math this year—addition and subtraction, place value, mental math strategies, geometry, measurement, problem-solving, and logical reasoning.

The children created beautiful murals as backdrops for each station, applying what they learned about the place in their social studies lessons and on their trips through the neighborhood.

It was a fun and meaningful morning that allowed the students to see the application of math in their everyday lives. The children are so excited to use what they learned the next time they go shopping at the grocery store!
