SAR AP Art Students Get a Medieval Look

Ms. Edelman’s AP Art History class took a guided tour of the Cloisters, the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s branch dedicated to Medieval art and architecture.

Having studied the Middle Ages, the students were able to see examples of Romanesque and Gothic works close up, the stained glass windows, illuminated manuscripts, chapels with Romanesque arches and ribbed vaulted ceilings, and the Cloisters’ most valuable work, The Annunciation Triptych, were highlights of the day. Students also enjoyed the famous Unicorn Tapestries and the cloistered gardens, and had a beautiful view of the Palisades.

“Seeing the medieval Spanish Tanach at The Cloisters and being able to read the text from it was such a cool experience,” said Julia C. “It brought the medieval period to life in such a unique way.” Maya J. added, “Being surrounded by Medieval art was a moving experience, and having learned about the works beforehand, I could fully understand and be immersed in the history I was viewing.”

The students gained a deep appreciation of Medieval art and architecture and the experience brought their studies to life.
