SAR HS Hosts Envision Shakespeare Competition

Last week, SAR High School hosted seven schools for the 10th annual Envision Shakespeare competition, a program run by English teacher, Nancy Edelman, and drama teacher, Rebecca Lopkin. Every year, a scene from a Shakespeare play is performed by the students without any costumes or props except four folding chairs. This year, the school’s timely choice was The Merchant of Venice. The SAR ensemble, coached by English teacher Allison Miller and directed by seniors Abigail C. and Sonia S., put on a stellar performance. Senior Yehuda S. won best supporting actor for his portrayal of Shlyock’s (only) friend Tubal, and junior Nate H. won best actor for his portrayal of Shylock.

“The Envision Shakespeare program is fantastic, exposing so many to the interpretive possibilities of Shakespeare,” said Nate. “With Ms. Miller as our faculty advisor, SAR’s performances have improved each year.”

“It was incredibly fulfilling to be in a club that related to my passions for the dramatic arts and was also composed of peers and schoolmates with whom I have always wanted to bond and collaborate,” said Yehuda. “All of the rehearsals leading up to the competition were a joy, and it was very meaningful to end the competition by receiving the award for Best Supporting Actor for my performance. The lovely, congratulatory responses I have received from my peers and teachers have really touched my heart. There’s nothing better than to be seen and acknowledged by the people around me who I cherish. I hope that the whole experience does not end here, and that the bonds that were made will continue to grow.”
