Mr. Krausz’s senior statistics students showcased their mathematical skills at their booths at the annual Probability Carnival. The goal of the carnival was for students to create an original game of chance that uses elements of probability (eg, not skill based) to make a “profit.” Seniors Lila H. and Talia A. had a food themed booth where the player chose one of six styled foods, including Israeli, Asian, Sephardi among others. The player then rolled homemade dice in an attempt to match the foods on the dice to their chosen style. A player who chose Ashkenaz food, for example, might hope for two of the dice to land on potato kugel and cholent, whereas that would be a losing game for one who chose Italian. In the “Game of SAR,” seniors Hannah J. and Jojo E. created a board game where the player’s goal was to graduate with a 3.0 GPA or higher. Each space they landed on either added or subtracted from their GPA, with options such as getting caught in the elevator (-1), holding a door for a teacher (+0.9), or giving a dvar Torah at the schoolwide shabbaton (+2.3). Underclassmen and faculty tried their hands at the games, while the seniors competed to see who could earn the most profit.
