SAR HS Tours Chelsea Galleries

SAR High School’s art students toured Chelsea’s premier gallery district with renowned artist and educator Tobi Kahn. Kahn’s tour featured a diverse range of artists from different backgrounds and time periods, spanning from contemporary to modern and from around the globe. The students viewed the galleries of David Zwirner, Pace and Matthew Marks, the late minimalist sculptor Eva Hesse’s and held interactive discussions about the works. Tobi Kahn also showcased the intricate installations of Tara Donovan, whose pillars of jewel-like CDs left a lasting impression on the students. They were then introduced to the work of major painter Paul Klee, whose distinctive style and use of color provided a contrast to the minimalist works they had seen earlier. The tour also included the art of young contemporary artists, such as Deidrick Brackens, Jordan Belson and sculptor Charles Ray, broadening their understanding and appreciation of different artistic styles and techniques.

Yair W. said, “I really loved going on the High Line.” Batsheva P. added, “This was a great way to finish off the year in ‘Portfolio Prep’ class.”

Throughout the tour, Kahn’s ability to engage with each student and encourage their questions created an enriching and interactive learning environment. His dedication to sharing his knowledge and passion for art made the experience unforgettable for the 11th grade art students. Check out his show, “Memory and Inheritance: Paintings and Ceremonial Objects By Tobi Kahn” on view May 16- November 20th at the Eldridge Street Museum. https://www.eldridgestreet.org/tobi-kahn
