SAR’s JV Girls Soccer team traveled to the spacious Frisch soccer court (aka, their gym) and defeated Ma’ayanot 2-1 in the league’s championship game.
These two teams were familiar with each other, as they played twice in the regular season. However, this game immediately had a different feel to it. In the previous matchups, both teams had a chance to show off their strong offenses, with SAR winning the first game 8-1 and Ma’ayanot winning the second game 8-6. In this game, the defense and goaltenders did a great job immediately limiting the offense, and at halftime the score was still 0-0.
Early in the third quarter, sophomore captain Lauren Kann scored to break the scoreless tie. The Sting managed to hold onto the lead by the end of the third quarter and for most of the fourth quarter, but with three minutes left in the game, Ma’ayanot tied the game. No goals were scored in the ensuing three minutes, and the teams headed to overtime.
In overtime, goals were once again hard to come by. Despite some opportunities for both teams, the teams still deadlocked at one after two seven-minute periods. A third overtime was needed to decide the winner.
The next overtime period did not last long, as Kann scored her second goal of the game 30 seconds in to give the Sting their second straight JV Girls Soccer title.
Congratulations to Coach Mark Koss and the entire team on a terrific season.
