The SAR girls JV basketball team, the defending champions, began their season on a 4-0 run. On Tuesday, November 28, one of the most important games of their season approached—the game against Frisch. SAR and Frisch were fighting neck and neck until the fourth quarter, when SAR went into the fourth up five. Frisch in the fourth quarter, led by Gabrielle Green, scored over 20 points to put SAR behind and ultimately win 62-49 on Frisch’s homecourt.
On January 21, Frisch and SAR faced off again, but this time at SAR High School. From the beginning there was tension in the air, however SAR pulled out with a four point victory, 38-34. Having the two games split between SAR and Frisch created some extra rivalry between the two teams on March 20, when they squared off again. As the game started, SAR won the tipoff, and a minute later layups were scored by both teams. The score was tied 4-4 until Frisch’s Rothschild hit a go ahead foul shot. Eventually SAR scored continuously, piggybacking on SAR’s Sophia Reich’s two 3 pointers, until SAR was up 24-14 at the half. The first half was dominated by SAR’s Olivia Weinstein, grabbing over 10 rebounds and blocking many important shots, as well as Yonah Pretsfelder’s many steals and outstanding defense.
However, Frisch did not give up easily. The gap tightened in the third, the lead being cut down to three, but SAR closed off the third quarter leading by seven. Everybody was off their seats as Frisch kept fighting back, however at the end of the fourth quarter, SAR went into a one and one foul shot bonus. Bella Ingber was fouled and proceeded to go 2/2 on her foul shots, putting the nail in the coffin and really sealing the game. As Frisch continued to foul, SAR scored three more points to put the game away. The SAR bench stormed the court while Reich held the ball as the clock struck zero and the SAR girls JV basketball team won back to back championships!
Sophia Reich was named MVP, a much deserved award for carrying the whole team on her shoulders the entire season. Every member of the SAR team was able to demonstrate their skills this season, however without the hard work of Coach Jeff Morris and Assistant Coach Dahlia Fischer, the back to back championships would not have been possible for the SAR Lady Sting.
