SAR Academy’s second graders dove into the world of measuring length, and wow—did they measure up! They kicked off the unit with a fun and thought-provoking read-aloud of How Big is a Foot? by Rolf Myller. The story helped students see why it’s so important to use standard units of measurement (spoiler: not everyone’s feet are the same size!). To test this out they tried measuring the classroom rug using their actual feet—and they got wildly different answers! It was a great discovery moment that helped students realize why using standard tools makes all the difference.
They started with the metric system, exploring meters and centimeters, then moved on to the customary system, learning all about feet and inches. Students practiced estimating, measuring, and even solving real-world word problems that involved adding and subtracting different lengths.
Armed with rulers, yardsticks and meter sticks, the young mathematicians explored every corner of the classroom—measuring desks, books, whiteboards and anything else they could find! One of the highlights? Measuring parts of themselves in both centimeters and inches. Did you know your arm span might be close to your height?
It’s been a hands-on, movement-filled, number-packed adventure—and SAR is so proud of how the second graders are thinking like real-life measurement experts.
