Last week, writers and editors of the SAR Sports Journal had the incredible opportunity of visiting the New York Times headquarters. Organized by SAR parent Leora Kulak, the club spoke to many different successful writers and the editor at large of The Athletic, the New York Times’ sports publication. The club’s conversation with Leon Carter, the editor at large, helped students better grasp the world of sports journalism, and talking with the other Athletic writers showed the club how different perspectives affect sports writing. One writer shared that she doesn’t enjoy sports as a hobby or in her free time and how this gave her a unique perspective. Chris Kirschner, who covers the Yankees for The Athletic, spoke about how he puts his fandom aside to report accurate information. Additionally, Alison Cotsonika explained how she coordinated big events such as the Super Bowl. The group learned the necessary traits of a sports journalist such as curiosity, commitment and hard work.
