This past Monday, February 5, the SAR Sting boys varsity hockey team defeated their Ramaz counterparts 6-0 in their final regular season bout. The last regular season home game for many of the Sting’s senior core ended victoriously, led by the shutdown goaltending of junior Henri Kolb. The Sting went up to a quick 3-0 lead after the first period of play, with goals by each of their three senior captains: Jason Burian, Joshua Friedman and Gordon S. Kolb. A second goal by Burian in the second period, as well as third period goals by junior Johnny Haims and senior Jacob Nayowitz would round out the Sting’s night with the six goals for and none against.
With this victory, the Sting clinched the divisional title, as well as the first overall seed for the upcoming MYHSAL playoffs, their first since 2011. With a final regular season record of 13-0-1, the Sting insured that both their potential postseason games before the championship game in Lawrence Middle School in Lawrence, will be played in the rink at The Hive. Making sure that opponents have to come through the rink is particularly advantageous for any SAR hockey team, as most competitors have little to no experience playing in an environment quite akin to their small rink with odd bounces. Having the home court edge, the Sting look forward to capitalizing on their opportunity and earning their first varsity championship birth since 2012, and then winning their first championship in the programs 14 year history.
