Coach Elliot Steinmetz and Zack Rosen Come to Slapshots

The 12th summer of Camp Slapshots has arguably been the greatest of them all. With a record enrollment of 90 campers per session, an all-star staff of role model athletes, and amazing facilities (including two indoor gyms at TABC), the campers had an absolute blast.

While Camp Slapshots has been known predominately as a hockey camp, the basketball is equally amazing. Rabbi Josh Kahn returned for another summer as head of basketball staff. With the addition this summer of Nafi Orlofsky, director of numerous basketball camps in Long Island and former assistant coach of NSHA High School, some of the best high school varsity players in the Yeshiva League, and a serious focus on basketball, the campers were able to compete and improve their skills in basketball as well as hockey.

Senior division campers were treated to a special clinic last week with Elliot Steinmetz and Zack Rosen. Elliot Steinmetz, newly appointed head coach of YU men ’ s basketball, arrived at Camp Slapshots on Tuesday morning to run special basketball clinics. Zack Rosen was the Ivy League player of the year in 2012 when he led Penn in scoring. The two of them ran drills which worked on shooting form, dribbling, coming off screens, positioning, and footwork. Zack has played for numerous team in the NBA summer league before ultimately settling in Israel, where he plays professionally.

In addition to the great clinics and drills he ran for our campers, he spoke to the campers about the games he played against Jeremy Lin (and held him to nine points!) and of all the current NBA players he played with and against. He ended the clinic with a powerful and profound message to the campers and staff about the role that rules (i.e., halacha) play in our lives as basketball players and as observant Jews.

With innovative clinics, exciting drills, competitive league games in basketball, hockey, and football, Camp Slapshots is the place to be!
