The Naaleh 12th grade government classes held a Civic Forum on April 26, to present their community engagement projects, the culmination of a semester-long unit on active citizenship. After a month of research, planning and practice, the seniors shared the local problems they identified and detailed their suggested solutions. One class focused on alternatives to the Bergen County Blue Laws that would allow Sunday commerce but preserve quality of life in small towns. The other class investigated possibilities for improving pedestrian safety near houses of worship in Bergenfield. Students learned how to find and understand municipal, county and state regulations, how to lobby local officials and how to think like a policy maker—skills that will set them up for success as active community members.
