(Courtesy of Seigel Shapiro) For over 60 years the New Jersey Department of the Jewish War Veterans has been awarding the Seigel–Shapiro Educational Grant to outstanding high school seniors. The scholarship is named for two Jewish World War II veterans who were members of the JWV: Leo Seigel, a past New Jersey department commander who served in the European Theatre during World War II, and Phil Shapiro a dentist who also served in the European Theatre during World War II.
Eligibility for these competitive educational grants is limited to direct descendants of members of the New Jersey Department of the Jewish War Veterans of the USA.
The grant committee is chaired by Morton Millinger, a former JWV New Jersey state commander who served for 16 months in Korea during the Korean War. Also on the committee are his daughter Lynn Millinger; Selina Kanowitz, an Air Force veteran and a former New Jersey state commander who served in Operation Desert Storm; and Carl Singer, a 31-year Army veteran who is past national commander of the Jewish War Veterans.
