Sephardic Congregation of Teaneck Celebrates Wedding of Bracha Jachter and Yisroel Perton

Bracha Jachter, daughter of Rabbi Haim and Malca Jachter of Teaneck, New Jersey, married Yisroel Perton, son of Rabbi Baruch and Raizie Perton of Montreal, Quebec, on January 11, 2018, at Congregation Keter Torah in Teaneck, New Jersey.

The kallah’s parents are the rabbi and rabbanit of Congregation Shaarei Orah, the Sephardic Congregation of Teaneck. Rabbi Jachter is a dayan on the Beth Din of Elizabeth and chair of the Tanach Department at Torah Academy of Bergen County. He writes the weekly “Sephardic Corner” column in The Jewish Link. The chatan’s father and mother are the rabbi and rebbetzin of Congregation Beth Zion of Cote St Luc, Quebec.

Bracha and Yisroel were introduced by master shadchan Shoshie Ellman of Michlalah in Yerushalayim. The kallah is a pre-nursing major at Stern College for Women and the chatan studies computer programming and cyber security at Lander College.

On the Shabbat following the wedding, the Shaarei Orah community participated in Yisroel’s Shabbat chatan. It is customary in Sephardic communities to have this celebration after the wedding; the Ashkenazic custom is to have the aufruf prior to the wedding. The community recited verses from Genesis 24:1-7, describing Avraham’s command to Eliezer to find Yitzchak a wife, along with their Aramaic targum. As the congregation sang piyutim celebrating the marriage, sweets were thrown and ululation, the special sound made by Sephardic men and women on joyous occasions, was chanted.
