Shabbat Project Unites Essex Communities

This year, hundreds of partners across the world helped coordinate the Shabbat Project, uniting Jews from all backgrounds throughout the world in an effort to have everyone keep Shabbat on October 23-24.

The Shabbat Project of West Orange/Livingston was a huge success, attracting more than 300 people to a Friday night dinner at Congregation AABJ&D, and more than 200 people to a Havdalah ceremony and concert with acappella group Six13 at Congregation B’nai Shalom. The Shabbat Project had officially kicked off Thursday, October 22, with Great Challah Bake events at the JCC in West Orange and the Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy in Livingston.

“The Shabbat Project was a huge success. Not only did this event provide an opportunity for those who have not participated in a traditional Shabbat experience to do so but, just as importantly, it demonstrated a clear display of unity among the synagogues in our community, particularly among the Conservative and Orthodox congregations,” remarked Moshe Glick, co-chair of the Shabbat Project of West Orange, along with Ira Bloom and Larry Rein. “With the recent surge in terrorist attacks in Israel, and the rise in anti-Semitism throughout the world, now more than ever is the time for us to unite.”
