On April 29, Ben Porat Yosef students from first through eighth grades engaged in a day of learning about solar energy, using science, technology, engineering, and math. Students planned and constructed solar ovens and then tested the ovens’ effectiveness with thermometers. They made improvements to their designs after workshops which helped them understand the various components of solar energy; the workshops taught the effect of UV rays on solar beads and calculating the differences in heat retention using various colors. The children then re-tested, thoroughly enjoying the final test, during which they baked s’mores in their own solar ovens.
