Special Exhibits Abound at Liberty Science Center

While STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) programs have skyrocketed in popularity over just the last few years, Liberty Science Center (LSC) has been dedicated to bringing the excitement of science to people of all ages since
it first opened in 1993. The museum always has plenty to see and do, but it is hosting some particularly exciting limited-time exhibitions this summer.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles:
Secrets of the Sewer Your kids might not expect to fi nd everyone’s favorite “heroes in a half shell” at a science museum, butLSC is the first stop on this  exhibit’s first-ever national tour, and will be here through September 5. Your whole family will have the opportunity to work together in conquering team-building challenges, collaborative games and brain-teasing puzzles. Activities in this exhibit include building a “bridge” together, assembling two electrical circuit puzzles by taking one apart to build another, navigating a rope maze, and practicing balancing on a skateboard.

Dino Dig
The museum’s backyard has been transformed into an archeological dig site for the special limited-engagement Dino Dig exhibition through Labor Day. Here, guests experience a paleontological expedition, working alongside LSC’s Dino Dig Guide
Team to discover replica fossils of prehistoric creatures buried in 35 tons of sand. The dig is a tribute to paleontologist Jack Horner, the inspiration behind Jurassic Park. Dino Dig is open daily (weather permitting) from 10 a.m until 2 p.m.

Bodies Revealed
While the Dino Dig and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Secrets of the Sewer are both included in admission, the museum also hosts state-of-the-art premium exhibitions, which are available to guests who purchase an all-access pass or combination pass. Right now, the featured premium exhibit is Bodies Revealed, which presents real human figures and organs that reveal the wonder and beauty of the human form. The skeletons and organs in Bodies Revealed came from individuals who donated their bodies to accredited medical universities in the People’s Republic of China for the purpose of study and education. The specimens are prepared through a process called polymer preservation, in which human tissue is permanently preserved using liquid silicone rubber. The exhibition shows detailed views of human anatomy, from whole body displays to individual skeletal, muscular, nervous and respiratory systems, among others. If you feel that your children are mature enough for the exhibit, it can be a unique opportunity to teach them about the complexities of the human body and the importance of healthy lifestyle choices including getting proper nutrition, exercising and avoiding smoking and  alcohol. Bodies Revealed will be at Liberty Science Center through mid-January.

Liberty Cup Drone Race
During the weekend of July 30-31, LSC is hosting the Liberty Cup Drone Race, featuring a race course of challenging obstacles. Some of the world’s most highly skilled drone pilots will be competing for a spot in the U.S. Drone National Races in August. Visitors will have an opportunity to meet the pilots, learn how racing drones work and follow the races through FPV (first-person view) goggles; everything is free with
museum admission.

Summer Pop Laser Show
And finally, there is the all-new Summer Pop Laser Show, featuring laser art set to popular songs from Justin Timberlake, the Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga and more. The laser show plays every Tuesday through Saturday at 5:15 p.m. in Liberty Science Center’s IMAX Dome Theater. Tickets are $7 for adults, $5 for kids and seniors, and are available online.
