I would like to commend The Jewish Link on the very well researched and beautifully written article, “One Woman’s Fight Against the American Family Court System” (August 18, 2022). This article features the work of an amazing figure, Dr. Amy Neustein, whom I am proud to call a colleague and a friend.
I met Neustein a couple of decades after she began her fervent campaign, characterized by her fierce dedication to the tikkun of revealing the truth of, and obtaining justice for, protective mothers like her. I, too, was a protective mother faced with losing my children to abusive family court processes. Having lost custody of her only child, Neustein became a heroine in this arena and a collaborator with my own work, where I serve as the co-founder and chair of the Battered Mothers Custody Conference in Albany, New York. I also had the unique pleasure of interacting with Neustein’s mother, Rebbetzin Shirley Neustein, heroine in her own right, prior to her death in 2001.
I hope that The Jewish Link will continue to spotlight the courageous work of Neustein and of others who, like her, have dedicated significant portions of their lives to this tikkun—to correcting these wrongs and bringing justice, safety and freedom to protective mothers and their children from across the country.
