On January 29th, Varsity Girls Basketball played a very good Bruriah team and came out on top by a score of 45-38.
The game started out slow, with SAR jumping out to a 7-4 lead after one quarter behind senior Samantha Hollenberg’s 3 points and 5 rebounds. SAR was able to hold onto its slim lead at the end of the second and third quarters, leading 14-12 and 26-22, respectively.
In the beginning of the fourth quarter, Bruriah, led by junior Nikki Bick, started hitting clutch shots to take the lead. But as soon as it seemed as if the momentum had shifted to the visiting team, sophomore Dahlia Fischer knocked down a huge 3-pointer to regain the lead. After that shot, the rest of the game belonged to Fischer. She hit a second 3-pointer to stretch the lead to 6, and hit many free throws at the end to ice the game.
As Fischer put it, “As a point guard, I was figuring out what was best for my team and what I could do to help my team win.”
Fischer is a great distributor, yet never shies away from a big shot. Those two 3-pointers are a big reason SAR came away with the win. Fischer led SAR with a whopping 24 points, Hollenberg scored 9, and senior Sofie Levinson added 4 points and 3 steals. Lastly, congrats to the seven seniors—Hollenberg, Levinson, Sara Waxman, Ali Trachtenberg, Yaela Halper, Avital Goldstein, and Arly Mintz, on playing their final regular season home game. Hopefully, a playoff home game will follow, but, if not, this was a great way for the seniors to go out.
The Lady Sting now sits at 8-2. Their next game is at Bruriah.
