Strong Start Helps Yeshiva University Men’s Soccer Earn Win Over Vaughn

(courtesy of yumacs.com) The Yeshiva University men’s soccer team earned a non-conference win over Vaughn College, 5-1, on Randall’s Island Field 10 earlier this month.

Leading the way for Yeshiva was freshman midfielder Alberto Benhamu, who scored three goals and added an assist during the afternoon. Junior midfielder Julian Ribak scored two goals with an assist, while classmate Dan Cohen produced three helpers. Senior defender Benjamin Aboudi recorded an assist of his own.

Yeshiva got on the board in the sixth minute, as Benhamu headed the ball into the net, off a long pass by Ribak, to make it 1-0 in favor of the home team. Benhamu recorded his second tally in the 25th minute, as he received a cross from Cohen and tipped the ball into the net from the left side to extend Yeshiva’s lead to 2-0.

In the 29th minute, Ribak took a feed from Cohen and launched the ball into the net, from 20 yards out, to give the Maccabees a three-goal cushion. Ribak struck again in the 40th minute, by tipping the ball into the cage off feeds from Cohen and Benhamu to make it 4-0 Yeshiva. That would be the score at the half.

In the second stanza, Benhamu completed the hat trick by receiving a pass from Aboudi and launching the ball into the back of the net, from 25 yards out, to extend the home team’s lead to 5-0.

Vaughn (3-2) got on the board with less than a minute remaining, as Ali Saleh received a through ball from Denis Moshchenko and scored on the breakaway, to narrow YU’s lead to 5-1. That would be the final score.

For the afternoon, Yeshiva had the edge in shots, 28-4. The Maccabees also had the advantage in corner kicks, 7-2. Sophomore goalkeeper Max Goldstein stopped a pair of shots to earn his third shutout win of the season.
