Stuart Kahan of Ma’adan Catering Is Named Cedar Lane Merchant of the Year

He’s not chopped liver this year! On Memorial Day, May 29, Stuart Kahan of Ma’adan Catering was presented with the 2017 Cedar Lane Merchant of the Year award. Congressman Josh Gottheimer was on hand to present Kahan with a congressional certificate of recognition to Ma’adan Catering, for “outstanding and valuable service to the community.”

Ma’adan, which opened its doors 35 years ago, in 1982, with co-founders/co-owners Stuart Kahan and Yossie Markovic, is known throughout Teaneck and beyond for its warm, welcoming Teaneck storefront that features old world-style glatt kosher delicacies like, well, chopped liver, fresh deli meats, stuffed cabbage, cole slaw, potato salad, kugels and soups of almost every type you can imagine. Seriously, Ma’adan hosts a freezer case/wall of soups. It also offers a dizzying array of kosher wines and liquors, as well as appetizing fish such as smoked sable, nova and baked salmon, belly lox and whitefish. Professional, sophisticated catering of all these traditional delights is offered for all occasions.

In 1983, Kahan helped start the BoPo (Business Operators and Property Owners) management group, which was the precursor to what is known today as the Cedar Lane Management Group, which Kahan chaired for five years. Today, the group includes over 175 businesses with the goal of helping to preserve and modernize the 100-year-old Teaneck shopping district. The management group has been responsible for the beautification of the family-friendly Pedestrian Plaza and the multiple, accessible parking areas. The management group also runs the annual Cedar Lane Family Festival and provides administrative support for the Teaneck Farmers’ Market, which runs Thursdays from spring through fall, in the parking lot right behind Cedar Lane, on Garrison Avenue at Beverly Road.

Kahan has also served as a vice president of the Teaneck Chamber of Commerce and was previously honored, with Markovic, by SINAI Schools in 2014, for being one of SINAI’s first job-training sites for SINAI vocational training for young adults with special needs. “From day one, Yossie and Stuart welcomed all of the young men and women of SINAI who worked for them, with open arms and respect, making them feel valued and needed, and treating them like everyone else,” Rabbi Mark and Linda Karasick told The Jewish Link in 2014.

“Our own son Yaakov was their first employee, and we are eternally grateful to Yossie and Stuart for providing him with the tools to be a confident, successful individual,” the Karasicks said.

“It is a true honor to be recognized by my peers at the Cedar Lane Management Group with this award,” Kahan told The Jewish Link. “All of us at Ma’adan and on Cedar Lane have worked hard to be a welcoming presence in the community. Our thriving business district and beautiful streetscape accomplishes that very well. It’s a pleasure to live and work here.”
