Sukkot: Decorating Outside the Box

Sukkot is a perfect time to embrace the concept of an outdoor room. Autumn, in this area, is beautiful and provides the optimal backdrop for the sights and sounds of family gathered around a table in a well decorated sukkah. While thinking about decorating your sukkah, try to fully seize upon the idea of sukkah as dining space. The first area to tackle is the sukkah’s lighting. Instead of buying the grim, been-there, done-that industrial construction lights, consider pulling out some DIY skills and fashion—with the kids participating—an outdoor chandelier by wrapping a hula hoop in twine, twigs and LED mini lights. Another way to make the sukkah feel more comfy is by placing an indoor/outdoor rug under your table. These rugs can be rinsed off with the garden hose and used year after year.  The canvas or wood walls of the sukkah can be draped in outdoor fabric or wrapped in faux ivy to create dimension.  A festive table surrounded by family, friends and plentiful food rounds out the perfect Sukkah.
