Students in Deniera Goldenberg’s ninth grade biology class recently examined several unknown samples to determine the pH levels of various common household agents. An incredible array of colors were examined from the interaction of natural plant based pigments (anthocyanins) in red cabbage juice with various acids and bases, many of which are in the students daily diets. Students were then tasked with identifying approximate hydrogen ion concentrations and pH based on the color change resulting from the chemical reaction. It was an eye opening and colorful day in the lab!
