Mrs. Rebecca Lopkin and Mrs. Sari Sheinfeld’s senior Holocaust Studies class recently welcomed Dr. Karen Shawn, professor in the Yeshiva University Holocaust Studies department. She came to teach three workshops to the seniors focusing on Jewish resistance. She shared many inspiring stories of Jews who resisted persecution and worse and demonstrated very clearly that so many were not “sheep to the slaughter“ but rather fighters till the end—religiously, physically and spiritually. Later that same week, the students studied various aspects of Jewish life in Nazi-occupied ghettos—from the Jewish leadership and self-help organizations to forms of resistance and agency. They then read Holocaust survivor Ida Fink’s short story “The Key Game” and created their own blackout poetry with its text.
