On November 9, 10 TABC students, along with six public school students, embarked on the NJ NCSY Houston chesed mission, one of many chesed missions that TABC participates in throughout the year. The NCSYers helped build homes for low-income families and also helped lead services on Shabbat.
The original intent of the trip was for the students to perform acts of chesed for the residents of the Houston community. What actually happened was so much more powerful and significant. Not only did the group help the members of the Houston community overcome the depression and pain of losing their homes or not having enough food for their families, but the TABC students also assisted the public school students in finding their purpose in Judaism. Whether it was lending out their tefillin and helping the public schoolers put it on for the first time, or singing zemirot with them on Shabbat, their activities during the trip definitely had a significant influence on all of their lives. All in all, everyone appreciated their efforts so much, making the trip to Houston one they will never forget.
