TABC’s eighth annual Book Day was a wonderful opportunity for interdisciplinary learning, as the entire school joined together to discuss the same novel. This year the school read “The Martian” by Andy Weir and the day was dedicated to guest presenters and faculty discussing the book from the halachic, psychological, medical, artistic, literary, scientific, nutritional and environmental perspectives. The keynote speaker, Aaron Brown, aerospace engineer at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, kicked off the day in a manner that really engaged the students and left them wanting to ask more questions.
There was also the opportunity for activities, including making Ductigami wallets, learning about Martian physics, learning about how to be prepared for an emergency, a workshop on healthy eating, Mars Pathfinder Egg Drop and Landing, Mad Science’s Rocket Science and more! In the middle of the day, students were treated to a performance of the off-Broadway show “That Physics Show,” given by David Maiullo, a performer par excellence. Following that, each student had the opportunity to experience “Escape the Room,” martian style. It was a great day all around.
Organized by Dr. Carol Master and Leah Moskovits, Book Day helps bring the school together as a community of learners and serves as a paradigm for the rest of the year.
