In advance of Chanukah, the senior class at TABC was privileged to hear from Dr. Steven Fine, the world’s leading menorah expert. Dr. Fine is the Dean Pinkhos Churgin Professor of Jewish History at Yeshiva University and director of the YU Center for Israel Studies. He described his investigation of the ancient Arch of Titus, which depicts the various vessels, including the menorah, taken from the second Beit Hamikdash by the conquering Romans in the first century CE. Fascinatingly, he detected remnants of paint on the arch and has subsequently recreated what the arch would have looked like in its original full color. His replica of the arch is displayed at Yeshiva University. Dr. Fine engaged in lively discussion with the TABC students, who showed both knowledge and interest in the research he presented.
