Mrs. Rosenbaum’s 10th grade chemistry class started their unit on nuclear chemistry before Sukkot. Mrs. Rosenbaum brought in her grandmother’s Depression-era glass juicer made out of uranium glass. This pale green translucent glass has small amounts of uranium oxides which were added to the glass before firing. The class was amazed to see the glass pieces fluoresce, or glow, under UV light. Similar phenomenon can be found in 1930s Fiestaware in the color fiesta red. The EPA considers these pieces safe to handle based on their very low emission levels, however, they recommend not using them for eating and drinking.
