Over a dozen students participated in TABC’s second annual STEM Menorah Competition over the week of Chanukah. In order to participate, students needed to create a menorah-inspired project using tools and technology from the TABC Makerspace (no real fire allowed!). Students made use of woodworking tools, 3D printers, laser cutters and quite a lot of glue in order to develop their projects. Many creative ideas were implemented, such as spring-loaded “candles” that simulated melting, LED candles that lit up when a sensor detected the shamash passing by and animated displays flashing the LED candles in different patterns. Finalists were selected by a panel of faculty judges before they presented their projects to the whole school, where an additional group of judges selected the winners who each received a 3D printer of their own as a prize! All of the students who participated showed incredible creativity, grit and excitement!
