This past Tishrei, students in Rabbi Michael Hoenig’s shiur learned that inspiration can come from unlikely sources. After screening a powerful ESPN special about a group of teenage football players who performed a car stunt that tragically led to the death of four young men, the students heard directly from Caleb Walton, the star quarterback of the team who was a witness to the devastating scene. In the film, he describes the tragedy in harrowing detail, and actually takes responsibility for not stopping his friends that fateful September day. Rabbi Hoenig began corresponding with Walton after his students tracked him down on social media, and this past month, he Zoomed into Rabbi Hoenig’s shiur and spoke to the students about self-improvement and faith, followed by a question and answer session. The students were incredibly moved by Walton’s emotional testimony. Special thanks to Rabbi Hoenig for continually managing to reach TABC’s students in creative, and always meaningful, ways.
