It’s been over a year since we’ve been able to say: Play ball! The TABC Storm varsity softball team was finally back in action after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID pandemic, and traveled to Paramus on Wednesday evening, April 28, to take on Frisch. It was clear how much TABC missed competitive play after exploding for four runs in the top of the first inning thanks to RBI’s from seniors Elan Goldstein, Yair Levie and Noam Kinderlehrer. Frisch was able to claw their way back into the game after hitting a three-run inside the park homer to cut the TABC lead to one run at the end of three innings. However, stellar pitching from senior Zevi Samet and a couple of costly errors from the Cougars in the field ensured the Storm would open the season with an 8-6 victory.
Just two days later, on Lag B’Omer, TABC swept Heichal in a doubleheader. The TABC bats really came to life in game one. Leading the way with key RBIs were seniors Goldstein, Ezra Kopstick and Eitan Mermelstein. Heichal had a chance to cut into the big Storm lead but junior Shmuel Yablok made a big two-out catch with runners in scoring position to stave off any chance of a Heichal comeback. Samet hit in the last run and the game was declared a mercy after only five winnings. Game two was a bit more competitive, with the teams knotted at two until TABC was able to regain the lead in the third inning. Junior Yis Kaminetzky brought in classmate AJ Seplowitz for a run followed by an RBI by Samet to bring home Kaminetzky. Heichal kept it a two-run game until the final inning when TABC scored several insurance runs thanks to a costly Heichal error. Heichal had a tough time generating any type of offense due to Samet’s killer fastball, making the Storm 3-0 on the season.
