Following the Abraham Accords’ historic normalization of relations between the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and the State of Israel, TABC’s senior class was privileged to welcome UAE Chief Rabbi Yehuda Sarna for an exclusive virtual visit on Monday, October 26. Rabbi Sarna briefly recapped his journey from YU musmach to chief rabbi, which was interspersed with amusing anecdotes, including one about a reaction to his kippah upon his first visit to the region (a border agent asked him where he got his unusual keffiyeh). Recently returned from spending the chagim in the UAE with his family and leading Yom Tov celebrations there, Rabbi Sarna emphasized the warm way his Emirati hosts have embraced him and the local Jewish community. In discussion with TABC’s students who eagerly questioned him about his experiences, Rabbi Sarna expressed great optimism that the new relationships being forged between Israel and its regional neighbors herald an opportunity for a brighter and peaceful future.
