“Tatami,” the first feature film co-directed by an Iranian and an Israeli filmmaker, will open in New York City on June 13 at the IFC Center and in Los Angeles on June 20 at the Laemmle Royal.
Directed by Cannes Film Festival Best Actress winner Zar Amir (“Holy Spider”) and Academy Award winner Guy Nattiv (“Skin,” “Golda”), the film is a tense, real-time thriller set during the World Judo Championships. It follows Iranian judoka Leila (Arienne Mandi) and her coach Maryam (Zar Amir), who receive a chilling ultimatum by the Islamic Republic to withdraw from a match against an Israeli opponent. Leila must choose between obeying the government or risking everything to fight for gold.
Inspired by real events and filmed in secret in Tbilisi, Georgia, “Tatami” explores themes of resistance, loyalty and personal freedom. The film is a U.S. release from XYZ Films and Flawless Entertainment.
“Tatami” is not rated and is recommended for mature audiences.
