Teaneck Couple Simplifies Kosher Cooking

When you think about gourmet food, you probably envision long hours over the stove. It doesn’t have to be that way anymore, thanks to “3Step Prep: Kosher Recipes for the Everyday Cook,” a newly released cookbook by Jason and Yael Gevertzman. Every recipe in three simple steps!

Nine years ago, then newlyweds Jason and Yael Gevertzman published their first cookbook, aptly titled “Newlywed Kosher: A Marriage of International and Traditional Kosher Cuisine.” After traveling around the state giving demonstrations for organizations, schools and synagogues, the two decided to start a family. “Writing another cookbook was something we always had in the back of our minds,” said Jason “but when we had our daughter six years ago, our priorities shifted.”

After moving into a new home and having their second child, the Gevertzmans realized there was a need for a new type of cookbook in the kosher market. “There are many cookbooks that have ‘family friendly’ recipes, but are not that easy to prepare,” said Yael. “Many other cookbooks already focus on how long a recipe takes to prepare. Realistically, time in the kitchen varies from cook to cook, so we decided to focus on minimizing the steps in each recipe,” said Jason. Yael continued, “as a parent of two kids under the age of 6 we want food that is quick and simple, but without sacrificing taste or presentation. Just because recipes are easy, does not mean they cannot look and taste gourmet!”

“3Step Prep: Kosher Recipes for the Everyday Cook” does just that. There is no time limit on preparation, just the knowledge that you can make a delicious dish in three easy steps. The cookbook contains over 100 recipes and large color photos. It has an accessible list of pantry ingredients and offers healthy eating suggestions and helpful hints.

Within the 100 recipes there are many salads, entrée options, side dishes and traditional kosher staples. Some of the more unique recipes include slow-cooked short ribs— a gourmet dish that melts in your mouth and is incredibly easy to prepare; sun-dried tomato pesto chicken; a nut-free full-flavored Pesto; mulligatawny—a spicy and scrumptious Indian soup; feta and spinach turnovers—flaky pastry and salty feta perfection; almond butter cookies—a completely gluten-free cookie; and Moscato ices—a perfect summer dessert.

Teaneck residents Yael and Jason Gevertzman have been married since July 2009. Their first cookbook, “Newlywed Kosher: A Marriage of International and Traditional Kosher Cuisine,” has been featured in the New Jersey Jewish News, The Jewish Voice, The Jewish Standard and NA’AMAT Women’s Magazine. They have performed cooking demonstrations for schools, synagogues and Jewish organizations. Currently, Jason works in finance and Yael works at the JCC of Fort Lee in digital marketing. They have two adorable children, Jessica (6) and Andrew (3). Cooking as a family is a hobby of theirs, often getting the children involved in preparation and plating. They hope you enjoy their book as much as they have enjoyed cooking and preparing each of the dishes.
