Teaneck Doghouse Sportstar of the Week: Benjy Shulman

The Jewish Link of New Jersey and Teaneck Doghouse would like to recognize 24-year-old Benjy Shulman as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The Teaneck native is a TABC alum and a four year veteran of the YU roller hockey team, where he is the team captain and vocal leader. The star defense man has been instrumental in Yeshiva University’s historic season, playing big minutes and barely taking a break. After a recent four game tournament sweep, a spectator told the JLNJ, “Despite being a stay at home d-man, his five points on the day led the team to four huge victories, including an upset of the top team in the conference. “A member of the team added “Benjy is a great leader, an awesome teammate and a fantastic ambassador for the team.”

Benjy, yasher koach on another great year. Who is your role model and why?

I’d say my brother Danny Shulman. He was a yeshiva league legend and the best hockey player and guy I know.

What is your favorite sport?

Either running or biking.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

Beating Frisch in overtime to win the TABC JV soccer championship in my freshman year in TABC.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

Corey Eisenband, he has such finesse with the puck and makes scoring goals look easy. Either him or my brother Danny.

What is your pregame routine, if you have one?

I usually eat a banana on the bench during warm ups so I don’t cramp and then talk strategy with Coach Elyashiv.

What is your earliest sport memory?

Having a catch with my best friend Yosef Robin in my backyard.

What is your weirdest sports memory?

When we were in D4 I once played three games the same day without taking a shift off and I wasn’t even that tired but then I fell asleep in the shuttle right when we left.

What is your favorite sports memory?

Making it to Natty’s in Fargo, North Dakota last year and going bowling with the team between games.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

I really enjoy eating healthy and when I’m not studying for my pre-med classes I am probably cooking. I even have an Instagram account dedicated to it (@bsaladman).

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

The ability to represent my school and team as well as my community. It makes me very proud!

Please send nominees for an upcoming Jewish Link of New Jersey and Teaneck Doghouse Sportstar of the Week to [email protected].

Please note: NCAA athletes can not receive payment so the line about the $15 gift has been omitted.
