Teaneck Doghouse Sportstar of the Week: Shea Cornick

The Jewish Link of New Jersey and Teaneck Doghouse would like to recognize 17-year-old Shea Cornick as this week’s Sportstar of the Week. The Rav Teitz Mesivta Academy (RTMA/JEC High School) senior served as the RTMA Thunder varsity hockey team’s assistant captain this past season and was one of the driving forces behind the team’s success. Cornick showed his leadership on the court when team captain Sammy Simcha was not eligible in their game vs. Ramaz. Cornick stepped up and scored the lone two goals for RTMA, earning them a 2-1 victory. He was also responsible for the two goals scored by RTMA in their 2-1 defeat of division rival Kushner Cobras, after scoring his first of two goals against Kushner.

Shea, congrats on another great season for the Thunder. Who is your role model and why?

Both of my grandfathers. Their work ethics and dedication to doing good inspire me to be a better person everyday.

What is your favorite sport?

Football.

What is your greatest sports accomplishment?

Getting a win and scoring two goals against Ramaz earlier this season. They were a good team and we were playing without two of our top players. Everyone stepped up and we were able to come out with a big 2-1 win that kept us in the playoff race.

Who is your favorite athlete and why?

PK Subban, because he is a great player, works hard and donates a lot of time and money to the community.

What is your pregame routine, if you have one?

Just eating healthy, drinking lots of water and stretching.

What is your earliest sports memory?

Playing ice hockey for the East Brunswick Bears.

What is your weirdest sports memory?

While playing ice hockey against TABC, we scored a goal but no one realized it—so we just kept playing for almost 30 seconds before the ref told us to stop for a faceoff.

What is your favorite sports memory?

Definitely when we beat our rivals the Kushner Cobras in an intense Motzei Shabbos game at home earlier this season. It was a close game, and then I received a perfect pass from my linemate and friend, Sammy Simcha, to score the tie-breaking GWG with two minutes left. It was fun to play against my friends, but more importantly, to beat them.

What is your favorite thing to do when you are not playing sports?

Just having a good time with my friends.

What is the best thing about being a Sportstar?

I’m proud to be able to represent my school, teammates and family.

The Teaneck Doghouse Sportstar of the Week will receive a $15 gift at the Teaneck Doghouse. Please send nominees for an upcoming Jewish Link of New Jersey and Teaneck Doghouse Sportstar of the Week to [email protected].
