Once again, Fire Chief Anthony Verley and Fireman Leonard Hanauer have alerted us to the potential fire hazards of the upcoming Sukkot holiday.
Candles
Burning candles should be placed in holders with glass or metal shades and a sturdy base.
Candles should be placed out of the reach of children and pets, and at least four feet from any combustible materials.
Candles should never be secured to any part of the framework.
Hair and clothing should be secured when lighting and handling candles.
Cooking
The Fire Department does not recommend cooking of any type, especially with propane, within the Sukkah.
Refrain from using wood burning, charcoal or flammable liquid fuels within the Sukkah.
The use of solid flammable cooking fuel, such as the type sold in small cans and utilized for reheating purposes, is permitted for warming, but electric hot plates inside are a better option.
Any type of outdoor cooking should be at least 10 feet from the Sukkah.
Electric Lighting
Lighting and extension cords used in the Sukkah should be specifically designed for the outdoors.
All extension cords should be appropriately sized for the job.
All plug connections should be kept dry and out of standing water.
All lighting, appliance and extension cords should be plugged directly into a GFCI (ground fault circuit interrupter) outlet. (If you do not have one, or are not sure, contact a licensed electrician for advice.)
Avoid tripping hazards from cords.
Leave space between light bulbs and flammable surfaces.
Heaters
Heaters should be avoided as they can prove hazardous to children and pets.
The Fire Department is here to answer any additional questions and to offer further information. Please contact us at The Bureau of Fire Prevention at 201-808-8080 ext. 5200.
Have a Safe and Enjoyable Sukkot!
