‘Teaneck Teen Idol’ Returns

Virtual auditions Nov. 10-20 for all 13-18-year-olds who live or go to school in Teaneck.

(Courtesy of TCC) One of Teaneck’s most popular events is coming back after a two-year interruption due to COVID.. The last “Teaneck Teen Idol” contest was packed with parents, relatives and friends from schools across Teaneck, as well as for Teaneck students who attend private and religious schools outside the township. It will be exciting to see and hear all our teen talent again.

“We’ve been asked by many students and parents when the contest will return, and we’re delighted we can hold it this January,” said Jack Aaker, vice president of the Teaneck Community Chorus, sponsors of “Teaneck Teen Idol.”

“It all starts with the auditions. This year we’ve doing them virtually,” said Gail Smith, musical director, coach, and co-producer of the event. “A virtual audition gives kids more flexibility in their schedules to audition.”

Students should send a movie of themselves singing one verse and one chorus of a song of their choice, a cappella. Then they should make a second movie singing “Happy Birthday,” also a cappella. They need to clearly label each file with their names and song title. Send them to [email protected]. Songs should be appropriate with no offensive language, and students may want to dress as they hope to look on stage.

Students must also submit pictures of proof of age, teaneck residency or teaneck school attendance. A $5 registration fee should be sent through PayPal at www.teaneckcommunitychorus.org. Full rules are on our chorus site, and a link to PayPal. Posters will also be sent to schools.

The big contest night is Saturday, January 14, 2023 at 8p.m. in the Teaneck High School auditorium. If needed, the performance schedule for finalists will be adjusted for the Sabbath. All singers chosen from auditions must be available for rehearsals and will receive music and performance coaching, as well as help with song choice.

The night has been a great experience for students, with a supportive audience. Judges will critique and select five finalists. The audience votes for the winner. Runners-up receive cash prizes and the singer named Teaneck Teen Idol receives a cash prize, performance opportunities during the year, and more.

Teaneck Teen Idol has helped launch several performance careers. It’s a Chorus mission to give Teaneck students the opportunity to perform and thrill an audience with their talent.
