Tenafly Chabad Academy began focusing on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) from first grade. All students from first through eighth grade have separate STEM instruction weekly. Some of it is during STEM class and some is in conjunction with the classroom teacher.
First graders only started formal STEM instruction after Thanksgiving, but they have already learned many new skills that they can use in their classes every day. Among other skills, first graders learn various google programs, IXL Math and Kodable, an online coding website. They also learn keyboarding skills. They are preparing them to be lifelong STEM learners.
Second, third and fourth graders are learning coding with Scratch, where they create games and stories using block coding. They also learn how to use different aspects of Google Drive, Google Slides, Google Sheets and Google Docs. In addition, they do a unit on internet safety. Students then take these skills and use them in their classrooms to create projects for their classes.
